What We Learned from UFC Fight Night (Walker vs. Hill)

UFC Vegas 48 is in the books. It delivered a number of highlight reel finishes. None more so than the main event, where Jamahal “Sweet Dreams” Hill held true to his nickname by putting Johnny Walker to sleep early in the first round. The card had very little impact on the rankings, but a few fighters helped their stocked tremendously with wins last weekend.

Through the twelve fights on the UFC Vegas 48 card, the Cage Calculus forecast favorites went 6-6, bringing the forecast’s overall record since its inception to 140-78-2. All forecast projections are based on a fighter’s CC rating. You can find out how those ratings are generated HERE. You can view the projections for last week’s fights HERE, HERE, and HERE. The CC Editor’s Picks were 6-6 and the odds-on favorites according to Vegas were 9-3.

Without further ado, here’s what we learned from UFC Vegas 48:

We’ve Been Sleeping on ‘Sweet Dreams’

Coming into the night, Jamahal Hill (#10 CC, #10 UFC) was not even in the Cage Calculus top 15. He came in as an underdog for this fight and the editor (yours truly) also went with Walker (NR CC, #12 UFC), despite Vegas oddsmakers having Hill as the favorite. Suffice it to say, we were wrong. After the win, Hill vaulted into the Cage Calculus top 10 rankings. Save for his lone defeat against Paul Craig (#7 CC, #11 UFC), Hill has more than earned and will likely not be underestimated his next time in the cage. Feel free to remind us if we do.

Johnny Walker Needs a Reset

Walker has now lost two in a row and four of his last five. It’s becoming clear his rapid career acceleration was too fast and he’s a bit out of his depth in the upper echelon of this division. It might be time to find him a matchup outside the top 15 just to see where he truly stands in the division or to give him a reset from the fire fights he’s been a part of lately. What is clear, however, is that Walker will not be challenging for the 205 pound title any time soon.

Jim Miller Has Most Definitely Still Got It

Miller has now delivered his second straight show-stopping KO. The veteran is now tied with Donald Cerrone for most wins in UFC history and has moved into sole possession of third place for most UFC finishes all time. Miller is most known for his submission prowess, but has delivered his last two wins on his feet. It’s clear Miller is more than a stepping stone for new fighters and he deserves a step-up in competition, given he is still demonstrating proficiency in numerous facets of the game.

David Onama Should Be on People’s Radars

Onama took a short notice fight for his debut and came in as a heavy underdog. He held his own, going up a weight class. This Saturday, he took on a fighter who missed weight in Gabriel Benitez. Benitez started strong, testing every bit of Onama’s chin. Onama held up and more, delivering a performance of the night KO. He has immense power in his hands and is someone to watch. He’s been thrown into the fire twice now, and acquitted himself well each time.

Stephanie Egger is a Problem

Egger (#14 CC, NR UFC) had commentators drawing comparisons to former champion Ronda Rousey after her submission win over Jessica-Rose Clark. Egger showed incredible judo skills, transitioning seamlessly to an armbar, which eventually earned her the first round victory and a performance of the night bonus. The 33 year old Swiss fighter now has finishes in both of her last two fights. The bantamweight division should be on notice.
