UFC Fight Night (Smith vs. Spann) Preview: Main Card

The main fight card for UFC Vegas 37 features six bouts, culminating in a showdown between two top light heavyweight contenders in Anthony Smith and Ryan Spann.

Joaquin Buckley vs. Antonio Arroyo (Men’s Middleweight)

Joaquin Buckley

  • CC Rating: 1572.7
  • Division Ranking: 46th out of 64 middleweights
  • Overall Ranking: 375th out of 501 men

Antonio Arroyo

  • CC Rating: 1504.7
  • Division Ranking: 61st out of 64 middleweights
  • Overall Ranking: 476th out of 501 men

Joaquin Buckley is best known for his dazzling spinning back kick knockout of Impa Kasanganay (also fighting on this card) last year. Since then, Buckley registered another Performance of the Night bonus by knocking out Jordan Wright only 18 seconds into the second round. However, his last time out he was on the receiving end of a highlight reel first round knockout at the hands (or, rather, foot) of the Italian, Alessio Di Chirico.

Antonio Arroyo is still searching for his first win in the UFC. After riding a 5 fight win streak into his debut, Arroyo has dropped each of his 2 fights in the UFC octagon by unanimous decision. Sitting near the bottom of the UFC middleweight rankings, he’ll look to avoid a third straight and the potential of getting cut from the roster entirely.

The forecast gives Buckley a sizable advantage in the first fight of this main card.

CC Projection: Joaquin Buckley (59.7%)

Tony Gravely vs. Nate Maness (Men’s Bantamweight)

Tony Gravely

  • CC Rating: 1708.7
  • Division Ranking: 19th out of 83 bantamweights
  • Overall Ranking: 126th out of 501 men

Nate Maness

  • CC Rating: 1653.2
  • Division Ranking: 34th out of 83 bantamweights
  • Overall Ranking: 207th out of 501 men

Aside from the main event, no fight features fighters with a combined CC Rating higher than these two up and coming bantamweights. Tony Gravely came into the UFC with an impressive 19-5 record, having won titles in multiple other promotions. He’s since gone 2-1 in the UFC. He looks to knock off a similarly impressive Maness as he makes his assault on the top 15.

Nate Maness boasts an impressive 13-1 record as a professional, including a 2-0 record inside the UFC octagon. His last bout saw him take home a Performance of the Night bonus with his rear naked choke submission of Luke Sanders.

The forecast projects Gravely to be the decent favorite to continue his upward trajectory. Nevertheless, this will be a fight to watch.

CC Projection: Tony Gravely (57.9%)

Arman Tsarukyan vs. Christos Giagos (Men’s Lightweight)

Arman Tsarukyan

  • CC Rating: 1696.6
  • Division Ranking: 21st out of 84 lightweights
  • Overall Ranking: T-139th out of 501 men

Christos Giagos

  • CC Rating: 1635.6
  • Division Ranking: 45th out of 84 lightweights
  • Overall Ranking: 237th out of 501 men

Ranked as the #14 lightweight contender in the official UFC rankings, Arman Tsarukyan will try to continue his climb up the rankings against Christos Giagos. Tsarukyan has strung together three consecutive wins in the UFC after dropping his debut to the impressive Islam Makhachev (ranked as the #7 lightweight in the world by Cage Calculus, # 6 by the UFC).

Giagos, on the other hand will try to stop that momentum and generate some of his own. He rides a 2 fight win streak into this one with his most recent win earned him a Performance of the Night bonus. A win would likely put him into the UFC’s top 15 and launch him upward in the densely packed Cage Calculus lightweight rankings.

Vegas has Tsarukyan as the most prohibitive favorite of the night with a staggering -800 money line for the Armenian. The Cage Calculus forecast is a little more measured, but still gives the nod to Tsarukyan.

CC Projection: Arman Tsarukyan (58.7%)

Ariane Lipski vs. Mandy Bohm (Women’s Flyweight)

Ariane Lipski

  • CC Rating: 1540.7
  • Division Ranking: T-31st out of 45 flyweights
  • Overall Ranking: T-84th out of 121 women

Mandy Bohm

  • CC Rating: 1590.0
  • Division Ranking: 21st out of 45 flyweights
  • Overall Ranking: 54th out of 121 women

Ariane “The Queen of Violence” Lipski comes into this one having dropped two opportunities to establish herself as a true contender in the flyweight division. After her stunning kneebar submission in Abu Dhabi in July of 2020, Lipski suffered consecutive TKO defeats at the hands of Antonina Shevchenko and Montana De La Rosa.

Turning it around won’t be easy, as Lipski steps in to face impressive UFC newcomer, Mandy Bohm. Bohm boasts an untarnished 7-0 record, including the flyweight championship in the TKO MMA promotion. Bohm finally gets a shot in the UFC octagon after her three previous scheduled debuts were cancelled.

The Cage Calculus forecast isn’t typically friendly to newcomers, yet projects Bohm to be the favorite in this one.

CC Projection: Mandy Bohm (57.0%)

Ion Cutelaba vs. Devin Clark (Men’s Light Heavyweight)

Ion Cutelaba

  • CC Rating: 1600.5
  • Division Ranking: 28th out of 43 light heavyweights
  • Overall Ranking: T-318th out of 501 men

Devin Clark

  • CC Rating: 1593.4
  • Division Ranking: 29th out of 43 light heavyweights
  • Overall Ranking: 338th out of 501 men

The co-main event of the evening features perhaps the most intense man in all the UFC, Ion Cutelaba. Cutelaba is 0-2-1 in his last three, suffering two knockout defeats (one controversial, one decisive) at the hands of Cage Calculus’ #5 ranked light heavyweight, Magomed Ankalaev. In his last bout, Cutelaba scratched out a draw against Dustin Jacoby, where it appeared he emptied his gas tank in round 1.

Devin Clark is coming off a defeat to tonight’s headliner, Anthony Smith. Clark has always seemed to be on the cusp of being a contender in this division, but has had a mixed record of success, never losing more than one fight in a row, but also never winning more than two in a row. Clark will look to avoid creating his first losing streak in the UFC, where Cutelaba will try for his first win in his last four fights.

In the narrowest projection of the night, the Cage Calculus forecast makes Cutelaba the slimmest of favorites.

CC Projection: Ion Cutelaba (51.0%)

Anthony Smith vs. Ryan Spann (Men’s Light Heavyweight)

Anthony Smith

  • CC Rating: 1798.5
  • Division Ranking: 4th out of 43 light heavyweights
  • Overall Ranking: 40th out of 501 men

Ryan Spann

  • CC Rating: 1711.1
  • Division Ranking: 10th out of 43 light heavyweights
  • Overall Ranking: 124th out of 501 men

The main event features a marquee matchup between two men in the Cage Calculus top 10 for the light heavyweight division. Anthony Smith is looking to get another chance at UFC gold after dropping his first chance to the man regarded by both Cage Calculus and the UFC to be the #1 overall fighter alive, Jon Jones. However, after defeating Alexander Gustafsson, Smith dropped two straight to top light heavyweights, Glover Teixeira and Aleksander Rakic (#2 and #7 in the Cage Calculus light heavyweight rankings respectively). Smith has since turned it around with victories over Jimmy Crute and Devin Clark in his last two.

Ryan Spann comes into this one boasting an impressive 5-1 record in the UFC, with his only defeat being a year ago to Johnny Walker (Cage Calculus’ #11 ranked light heavyweight). With a win tonight, Spann has the ability to get deeper into the top 10 and establish himself as a potential title contender soon.

Smith typically wins fights he is supposed to and has the chance to become only the 120th man in history (out of over 2000 male UFC fighters) to eclipse an 1800 CC rating. The forecast projects he will, making him a comfortable favorite.

CC Projection: Anthony Smith (62.3%)
